Mane Wall Restoration

Date July, 2020
Location Korzok, Ladakh
Category Conservation Actions

The cultural landscape of Korzok is dotted by numerous mane walls located along village paths, nomadic encampments and shepherd trails. Over the years many of these had collapsed and the order of mane stones placed on the walls had been disrupted.

In collaboration with the community and Korzok gonpa, a restoration of mane walls was carried out with volunteers from the community coming forward to carry out necessary repairs. Monks from Korzok gonpa performed rituals prior to and on completion of the repair works and guided the correct placement of inscribed mane stones. Over 38 mane walls were repaired during the course of the project.
